Book awards are very helpful to independent publishers and first-time authors, as well as established presses and previously published authors--recognition from one's peers lets us know we are on the right track and that our hard work is paying off in a professionally presented book. I've been fortunate in the last ten years to work with many wonderful authors and publishers and some of them have also won awards. Though you may not have heard of some of these competitions, they receive hundreds, or thousands, of entries and are carefully judged. I have acted as either editor, designer, publisher, or author (and at times in more than one role) in the following projects. --- Janice
